  • 11:00 AM   Grazier meeting at KBS South (Edgewood Dairy) 5-15-08
  • It has been a long winter and spring has not been as friendly as we have come to expect. I hope with the warmer temperatures forecasted we can actually begin to grow high quality forages very quickly. At the SWC dairy we have also been experiencing slower than normal growth and muddy conditions. Breeding programs are in the beginning stages at the Center with hopes of continued success of greater than 85% in our 6 week window. The next grazing discussion group will take place at the Charles Fletcher dairy near Purdy on Thursday, May 15 at 11:00 am. The topics to be covered will be status of breeding program: what has worked and why he does it. Charles mainly has larger Holsteins as he transitions them to smaller cows via a 3 way cross system. He does “set-up” cows to cycle at the beginning of his breeding window to ensure more cows calving at the beginning of calving season. Data from the SWC dairy suggests an additional $150/cow profit for cows calving in February versus April. We will also discuss his forage program and the resulting wedge with slower than normal spring growth and upcoming summer grasses. Dress appropriately and bring a sack lunch if you wish. We will provide drinks. I look forward in seeing you on Thursday, May 15 at 11:00 am.
